Wikipedia

Wikipedia has always been a wonderful tool in my college research. However, now that I have moved to upper level classes, I have found that more more and professor frown upon wikipedia being a research source. I understand that it is an open media and that any Joe, Sally or Frank can post/ edit a topic. However, when you are researching topics involving higher education, I find it impossible that someone with inaccurate knowledge of the topic could post a believable post.

Do I believe that it should be banned from all learning? No, but I believe that for responses and shot papers, it is a fine source. But, for some research, only academic Web sites can be used, and that is where the Wikipedia line should be drawn.

Also, I feel this sit has proved how much the internet has pulled people knowledge from all over the world together. For a "normal" encyclopedia a panel of experts would be used. But this resource pulls individual knowledge from all over the world.

Response 1

The Memex is a machine that that can bring information via files and microfilm to the operators finger tips. It can be considered an archaic form of a computer. But there are core differences modern day computers are smaller, more convenient and have more advanced technology. The Memex is revolutionary, but has older forms of technology. Today, we can carry laptops to class, with the Memex a great deal of room was needed for its placement. Both computers and the Memex can search through a plethora of valuable information, such as texts books and works of literature. So while both machines may have their differences they are drawn from the same basic idea. The machine was one of many stepping stones that have pushed us in the direction of a modern day computer.
Bush draws a direct correlation between the users mind and identity with the Memex. A person must use his or her mind to decide that something needs to be found, captured in time or entered into the Memex. After that initial decision your mind send electrical currents to your finger tips and different parts of your brain allowing your limbs to carry out the functions that the mind has enquired. Once your mind has you body entering data into the Memex the same kind of transformation is taking place. Your fingers are pushing keys that are sending messages into the Memex that are causing a chain reaction inside the machine.
Idenity is related to the machine in a more abstract manner. Man’s identity can be changed an uplifted just by having the power to change his future. The same way pioneer’s carried on day after day while building communities, the Memex gives hope and light into the future. Man’s work can be saved and answers to his problems are only a finger tip away.

My First Blog

I have been using the internet, since the olden days of American Online (AOL) version 2.0. I can vivdidly remember my first AOL screen name, JFroggyBurk. I was a frequent instant messager, e-mailer and played an occasional game of slingo. As technology advanced, so did my internet habbits, I ventured from AOL to AIM, and spent hours and hours on a Ohio running Website tittle, JJhuddle. In high school the web became a tool for paper writing, research, shopping and communicating with friends. In College, the internet became my life line, it was the only way I could talk to friends at different schools and my friend in Iraq. I would webcam him from Iraq. These were the times that I most embraced technology and realized how much it has improved the quality of life.

Today, I am your average college student. I am addicted to my cell phone, IPOD and computer. I cannot go long than five minutes without looking at my cell phone and check my email and facebook accounts hourly. I consider myself a Magiver of the web, I can find anything or anyone (honestly, try me).

I have never blogged though, so this is a new web-based experience for me, that I am excited about.
